In November 2023, COP28 in Dubai gathered global leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders under the UNFCCC framework to tackle pressing climate challenges. I was tasked with ensuring the smooth delivery of 42 events at the UNFCCC Pavilion over a demanding two-week programme. This involved leading the UNFCCC team, managing high-profile engagements, and working closely with local service providers, including volunteers, security, cleaning, café, branding, and production teams. The role required meticulous planning, decisive leadership, and adaptability, as well as addressing challenges such as language barriers, task delegation, and maintaining high standards for events attended by influential figures such as Bill Gates and Hillary Clinton.
The execution of the programme presented unique challenges, including navigating language barriers among the multicultural team of local volunteers and service providers. Clear communication protocols and visual aids were essential to mitigate misunderstandings and align everyone on expectations. Delegating tasks effectively to a diverse team under tight schedules also required careful consideration of individual strengths and cultural sensitivities. Motivating the team amidst the intense workload was another challenge; I focused on fostering a supportive environment, recognising contributions, and maintaining open communication to boost morale. Liaising with high-profile guests such as Bill Gates and Hillary Clinton demanded exceptional coordination to meet their requirements while ensuring security and confidentiality, all while preserving the smooth flow of the broader programme.
Despite these challenges, the programme concluded with all 42 events delivered successfully, garnering positive feedback from attendees and stakeholders. The UNFCCC team was motivated and confident, supported by a collaborative and well-organised structure. Local volunteers and service providers praised the inclusive coordination, while high-profile guests experienced professional and seamless engagements. This experience reinforced the importance of clear communication, cultural sensitivity, and strategic leadership in managing complex international events, further solidifying my expertise in delivering impactful results under pressure.
